We’re taught from a young age that eye exams are all about reading tiny letters on a wall. If you can read them, great, you “pass”. But those tests only measure eyesight, which is the clarity of what you see.
Vision is far more complex. It’s how your brain interprets and processes the information your eyes collect. It includes tracking, depth perception, eye teaming, and spatial awareness AND when these systems aren’t working together, it can lead to symptoms like:
- Trouble reading or concentrating
- Frequent headaches
- Motion sickness
- Poor hand-eye coordination
- Fatigue after screen time
As Dr. Appelbaum says, “Eyesight is a symptom. Vision is the brain”.
How Screen Time Is Reshaping Our Eyes and Brains
The modern world is not designed with our vision in mind. Most of us spend 7+ hours a day on screens, and kids as young as 8 are logging over 6 hours daily. The constant screen exposure is changing how our eyes and brain work.
Screen time locks the eyes into a fixed, close-up focus. We blink less (which causes dry eyes), move our eyes less (which strains the muscles), and bombard our brains with artificial light. Over time, this leads to:
- Eye strain and blurred vision
- Poor sleep due to disrupted melatonin production
- Increased risk of myopia (nearsightedness)
- A decline in visual stamina and processing
And perhaps most concerning, we’re seeing a rise in functional vision problems in children, many of whom are being misdiagnosed with ADHD or learning disorders when the real issue is their eye-brain connection.

One of the most powerful analogies shared in the episode came when Dr. Appelbaum compared eyesight to a snapshot, and vision to an IMAX movie experience.
He explains that while eyesight is simply the ability to see an image like taking a still photo. Vision is about processing, filtering, and making sense of complex visual input over time. Shawn Stevenson, the show host, adds a relatable story: attending an IMAX screening at Universal Studios. The screen was so massive, his eyes darted around trying to take everything in. But it wasn’t just his eyes adjusting, it was his brain. Once his brain synced with the sensory input, the overwhelming size of the screen faded and it became immersive.
Dr. Appelbaum notes that this sensory adaptation highlights the difference between central (focused) and peripheral (ambient) vision pathways. A healthy visual system can process both simultaneously allowing us to take in expansive visual scenes without sensory overload. But for many people, especially in our overstimulated digital world, that balance is disrupted.
“That processing is really what makes a movie like that enjoyable or makes you dizzy and nauseous if your brain can’t keep up,” Dr. Appelbaum explains.
This analogy isn’t just entertaining, it’s a critical insight into why so many people experience visual fatigue, disorientation, and overwhelm in modern environments. It’s also why functional vision therapy focuses not just on what you see, but how you see and how your brain interprets it.

The Hidden Signs of Vision Problems in Kids
One in ten children has a functional vision problem significant enough to impact learning, yet these are often missed in standard eye exams. When kids struggle to track across a page, copy from the board, or concentrate during reading, it’s often mistaken for:
- ADHD
- Dyslexia
- Behavioral issues
- Emotional dysregulation

The Vision-Sleep Connection
You might think your eyes shut down during sleep, but in reality, they play a vital role in regulating how well you sleep. Deep within your retina are specialized photosensitive cells called intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs). These aren’t used for seeing, they’re light sensors that communicate directly with your brain’s internal clock: the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) in the hypothalamus.
This system governs your circadian rhythm, the natural 24-hour cycle that regulates sleep, hormones, body temperature, and more. When ipRGCs detect bright light (especially blue light from screens), they send a signal to delay melatonin production. That’s great in the morning, when you want to feel alert. But at night? It’s like tricking your brain into thinking it’s still daytime.
According to the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, exposure to light during the evening can delay your ability to fall asleep and reduce the quality of your rest by shifting your circadian clock later than desired (NIGMS, 2022).
That’s why too much artificial light before bed, especially from phones, tablets, and TVs confuses this delicate system.
The result? Poor sleep quality, disrupted hormone cycles, and increased risk for conditions like metabolic syndrome, depression, and immune dysfunction.
But here’s the good news: your visual habits during the day shape your sleep at night.

- Reducing screen time in the evening allows melatonin to rise when it should.
